Lens Based Project
Flushed Dusk
24” by 36”
This piece was inspired by SVellecca, a lesser-known, modern photographer who commonly captures Americana-themed pieces. I chose this photograph due to the visually pleasing colors and how it worked well with the inspiration I was going for, the early dusk sky created a beautiful hue on the sky and while the upfront buildings are darkened

Inspiration SVellecca tries to have his pictures tell a story, usually consisting of either vibrant colors, completely black and white, or the 1960’s Americana aesthetic. I was drawn to have SVellecca due to the unique color contrast of his photography style, along with the fact he takes his pictures using his iPhone, and not an expensive camera. He takes pictures of a variety of things in many different angles than most and I found that intriguing. More common themes SVellecca captures are cars, people, nature mixing with mankind, and vintage signs and buildings. For my final piece, i gained a lot of inspiration from the, untitled, second image in the slide show. I really enjoyed how the bright sky contrasted against the dark land and carnival. From this photo, along with SVellecca's common theme with a small town aesthetic is what created my final piece. |
Planning Sketch After reviewing SVellecca's different styles and themes, i knew i wanted to do something with the sky and loud colors, I tried taking multiple pictures of sunsets, and sunrises, anything to get a good vibrancy in the sky to counter the dullness of the houses or buildings on the ground. |
Practice Photos
|
I tried to show the direct inspiration in these practice photos. I wanted to express the same theme that SVellecca portrays in his pictures with use of vibrant colors and contrasting themes. I tried to use both direct and indirect ideas from his work to create a good mixture of originality and impression. With each image, I tried to express a different way VCellecca takes his pictures. |
|
I tried to take pictures at night and late afternoon to show the different businesses in my communities store lights. The neon store lights showed vibrant colors that are a direct inspiration from the photographer i wanted to have my pictures based on. SVellecca's photos commonly have a bright vibrancy of color that i wanted to recreate in my pictures. My inspiration is known for his vintage and Americana themed pictures that I tried to recreate, especially with the Leon's Drive In sign. |
|
SVellecca has many pictures of his pet dog, those photos being the inspiration for these pictures of my two dogs, along with some animals that stood out to me on my trip to the zoo. It can be very difficult to photograph living beings, especially animals. I can be even more difficult when the picture is taken through dirty glass which was my issue with the pictures of the penguins. |
|
These pictures are more original and less sampled from my inspiration. With these pictures, I still tried to get a vibrancy with my colors, but I also took a lot of my own ideas. The image of the withered fence, and side of the building were not heavily inspired in the slightest, rather unique to ideas i had. On the contrary, the flower garden and Bay View neighborhood flag were directly inspired by some of SVellecca's pictures. |
Reflections
I wrote my notes in my phone as I went a long though taking a majority of the pictures. Most of these notes were very negative and wrote out quickly, My biggest and most constant concern was the depleting light of day and that if I were to take pictures in the night that they would not turn out at well as they could, Luckily, as the night fell I was able to use it to my advantage with pictures of neon store signs, where, when compared to the dark sky, had the colors looking extremely vibrant. Even though my notes constantly seems rushed and stressed, I did find myself using art elements within the incomplete sentences.
Compare and Contrast
Though I know I did not stick perfectly to my inspiration, I do like the outcome and how the majority of pictures came out. I had a common theme and most can be categorized into groups of either night, dusk, dawn, or animal which was my goal to have a variety, yet keep it organized as to not loose the original idea.
On the left is SVellecca's photo that i used for inspiration, and on the right is the picture i tried to recreate his picture in. I think i managed to recreate the style while keeping some originality to the photo.

ACT responses
1) Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
I chose SVellecca for my inspiration, and my favorite pictures that he took was those with bright color and usually had the sky in it, creating the inspiration for many of my practice pictures, and my finished product. Using my artist i was able to take pictures from more unique angles and was able to look for vibrant colors that had already loved finding.
2) What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
SVellecca carries a unique over saturated look to many of his pictures. He enjoys the vintage, Americana aesthetic to capture. Many of his photos are of objects or buildings, though he does have many of people or pets.
3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Though I did not enjoy this project, it did show me the difficulty of being a photographer. Lots more has to go into being good at taking pictures, especially when following a theme, than just take a camera and point. Taking these pictures were difficult since i was not using a professional camera. Using my phone should difficult, especially when taking pictures of my lives animal models.
4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
SVellecca was a difficult photographer to research since he is not very well known. From the information I could gain from websites who mention him, his own website and what he likes to photograph, he is more particular as to what he wishes to take pictures of.
5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
With what little research I could find, I fund how much respect I had for him. He has a unique way of taking his pictures and I truly enjoy it. I have never been a major fan of the photography art form but the way SVellecca has a style and distinct way he takes most of his photos.
