Vine and Compressed Charcoal Drawing
This assignment was an especially difficult one for me since I am not used to using charcoal as a medium, and what little experience I do have with it is negative. With most school work I have difficulty concentrating but when I draw I commonly have a YouTube video playing for background noise. However, with this project since it involves looking at the model being drawn and that I am new to the medium I was not only unable to watch YouTube but had a very hard time concentrating. Finding objects to draw was much more difficult than I expected as well, I couldn’t find much fruit in the house and ended up drawing a potato in one piece for compensation. When resizing the objects to draw on paper I tried to use a mixture of symmetrical and asymmetrical balance to make each piece interesting and unique when lined up with one another. I believe my first attempt came out smoother than any of my other drawings, albeit a lot lighter than any of the others as well. Most of the drawings however came out rough and very blotchy, with visible charcoal lines I couldn’t blend in well. This was a very new project for me and though I am not very proud of my work, but I am glad I did it.
This was the original sketch i did of my final piece in the vine charcoal. I tried to get a rough outline of all of the shapes and shadows before making anything too dark to erase in case of a mistake.

This is the object layout the i decided to draw for my final piece. For the object layout I tried to get a variety of shapes, shadows, and textures. I was able to find a banana to use, and i chose to put it in my final piece since I felt it was a more classical choice.

This is my final third sketch. It came out extremely blotchy and rough but I learned more about how much pressure to apply to the charcoal when using it.

this is my third sketch before rubbing the charcoals together. I outlined where i found the most prominent shadows to be and experimented with using the charcoal flat on its side.
