progression; the inability to look back
December, 2021.
Continuing my use of digital creations, decided to create a pierce inspired by an older themed family portrait. This piece has specific inspiration found in many of Ilya Repin's art works. I found direct inspiration though their use of blurred paint to create realistic portraits. I based this piece off of myself through the years taking the place of the family roles. I found it helped greatly to use myself as a model to use as human photo reference throughout this project instead of having to search out online references for poses or skin tones when i could directly speak to the source for any needed references images. I added a much less realistic effect to Repin's inspiration through the TV static in place of facial features through symbolic meaning of my own life experiences.
Inspiration and Reasoning
I found inspiration through many of Ilya Repin's paintings of the 19th century. This Russian artist was most famously known for the controversy he created from his Ivan the Terrible and his Son Ivan painting depiction of when Ivan murdered his son in a blind rage during an argument. I wanted to mimic Repin's style of blurred and textured style he uses when he created his oil paintings. |

Process
Using the mobile device application Procreate, I started but using broad outlines and adding in the original sketch for this project, and continued by add more layers onto the base and background started adding more details as i went. I adjusted the original sketch to ensure i had the subjects placement in the correct places within the drawing.
I was constantly looking at photo references for the curtains, flowers, clothing, and faces, although my sketches differed from the final piece as i decided to block out the faces with gltiched and TV static effects this project morphed frequently throughout the process of creation as i added new ideas for how i wanted to present myself. I chose to remove the hands placed on shoulders for a colder, more distant feel, and as i have always struggled to picture my own face i replaced facial features with a TV static like effect symbolizing both a modern technological effect and for my inability to accurately portray or remember my face. |

Contrast
My piece is not as realistic as Repin's, nor does it replicate his detail. i purposefully added unrealistic aspects in contrast of Repin's inspiration. |
